Leading Edge Search Engines

Conventional Wisdom generally accepts that the "category killer" in search engines is Google. They're well established in the public's mind, they produce an excellent technical product -- they're the 800 pound gorilla.

Google isn't the young challenger anymore, but a few interesting new arrivals are begin to surface.

All The Web is a new search engine that showcases FAST technology. It does everything that Google does and more. It also sweeps the entire web more frequently than anybody else. thier priority has not been on public acceptance but rather demonstration of their technical prowess in the hopes of selling their capabilities. It currently seems to be scaling up to a full public rollout; their growth is in the insider "digerati" segment.

Teoma is a new search engine owned by AskJeeves.com. Although their scope of the web is smaller than Google's, they are increasingly known for conducting excellent searches within their limited scope. They are focusing at helping people refine a seach to narrow down the results effectively.

WiseNut is a recent search engine which is still a work in progress. They tried to stake out the same ground as Teoma - improved search refinement - and they have a larger scan of the web, but they/ve been consistently several months behind on their updates. Stay Tuned.

As Google becomes more established, as commercial sites become better at manipulating (optimizing) their positions, it's possible that one of the upstarts could be the next Google.
