Intranets

Intranets are websites for "inside the business". They can be restricted to computers that are physically on your property and on your own network, or key personnel can be given usernames and passwords (which you administer) to allow remote access across the internet.

Some business applications that benefit from an intranet are where there is a certain amount of detailed data, such as pricelists, technical specs, or product drawings that are frequently updated and centrally located.

Extranets

An extranet is a intranet which is extended out to key partners. For instance, you may want to give certain clients or other businesses that you partner with access to project information, technical drawings, and schedules. An extranet is a website that allows authorized persons outside of your company and location to see restricted information. Generally, usernames and passwords are controlled by your staff, and access to your documents is monitored and documented.
