Flash is an Adobe software product that is not a web standard, but has found almost universal acceptance and implementation. In general, as long as you don't require your audience to have the most recent update, you won't have any problem using a Flash movie in your website.

Of course, if you're working an intranet application for an internal audience, and you know that there's a standard software and bandwidth parameter, than you're safe using the most recent update.

What Flash is wonderful for is adding animation or movement to your website. It's key to remember that Flash will not turn your computer monitor into a television set, or your website into a commercial. But if you've got a system to explain, or believe that step-by-step instructions are important, then a Flash movie can help advance your business goals.
